Activities of the JHAA
The JHAA sponsors a number of activities throughout the year for
our residents to meet, socialize, and address neighborhood issues. These
activities are for residents and their guests only.
| February |
Mardi Gras
Mini-Party
King Cake and other refreshments served after the regular
monthly meeting in February. |
| March or April |
Easter Egg Hunt
Each spring, our Easter Egg Hunt gives our youngest residents a chance to parade their
cutest Easter outfits and search for plastic eggs filled with candy. After
the hunt, everyone spreads out a picnic lunch on blankets or folding chairs
while the kids sort through their loot. |
| March or November |
Senior Social
Since most of our activities each year are geared toward families and
young children, this event allows some socializing for our residents
aged 65 and older.
|
| May |
Neighborhood-Wide Yard Sale
For any residents wishing to participate. We place an ad in the
paper with a link to a map on this website which illustrates which
blocks in the neighborhood will have one or more houses holding yard
sales that day.

| June |
Next Generation Jackson Heights
This is a social networking event for residents aged 25 to 50.
Part casual party and part brainstorming session, it allows our young
adult residents to get to know one another better (without the kids
around!) and
exchange business information. It also provides the opportunity for the up-and-coming leaders in our
community to discuss neighborhood issues, goals and ideas for
improvements.

| July |
July 4th Bike Parade
On the morning of Independence Day, adults and children alike parade
through the neighborhood on bicycles, festooned with streamers,
balloons, ribbons and other fun flair. Those who don't want to
ride can simply walk and follow the bikers, or stand along the route and cheer the bikers on.
It's a little taste of small-town Americana that everyone can enjoy.

| August |
Summer Splash
Our annual summer water party is a huge hit with the
neighborhood children and the adults as well. We rent an
inflatable water slide, play water balloon dodgeball, set up some
slip-n-slides, and provide a wading pool for the wee ones.
|
| October |
Fall Festival &
Halloween Party
This neighborhood block party, held each October, is our
largest event each year, featuring great food, neighborly conversation and a
dessert auction with homemade delectables made by our residents. Fun activities
for the kids include sack races and pumpkin decorating. |
| November |
Dog Day Afternoon
This event allows our resident neighborhood canines (and their owners)
to meet for conversation and games
of catch. |
| December |
Christmas Caroling
One evening each December, residents of all ages gather in front of a host home for a caroling sing-along. |
| December |
Holiday Mini-Party
Holiday-themed refreshments served after the regular monthly
meeting in December. |
| Monthly |
Neighborhood Meetings
We meet monthly in person to discuss neighborhood issues. At each meeting, the officers and committee chairs give their reports, and a
representative from the Mobile Police Department gives the crime report. (We
are proud to say that our area has one of the lowest crime rates in the
city!) We also frequently have a guest speaker to give a presentation or a
talk on different topics such as home security and safety, gardening,
property taxes and much more. |
Monthly or
Bi-Monthly |
Newsletters
We publish a newsletter every month, or every other month,
depending on upcoming activities.
With over 350 homes in the JHAA area, the newsletters are distributed via email
to save on printing costs. Neighborhood-wide paper distributions are generally reserved
only for special
notices just one or two times a year. Our newsletters feature
articles citing trash pickup days,
notifications of meetings, articles spotlighting resident-owned businesses
and much more. |
| Quarterly |
Garden Club
The Jackson Heights Garden Club was founded in 1949 and has met
monthly or quarterly since then. In 2009, they celebrated their
60th anniversary. The membership has changed over the years, of
course, but the organization continues. This longevity is a
marvelous historical element of our community and a testament to
the love these residents have for this area. Now that the
JHAA has taken over the duties of neighborhood association
business and community notifications, the Garden Club has become
part social activity, part neighborhood discussion. |

CERT
A number of our residents have undergone the Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT) training. These residents have been trained in emergency
preparedness and post-disaster assistance in the event of local hazards such
as hurricanes. The training focuses on basic disaster response skills, fire
safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical
operations. We encourage all residents to participate in the CERT program at
least once, and if possible, to take a refresher course annually.
