Raise the Blade!
Lawn Care for our Area

Most yards in Jackson Heights are planted with hardy St. Augustine grass and Centipede grass.  What many people do not know about these varieties of grasses is that they should not be cut too short.  Each type of grass has its own mowing height.  Cutting these grasses too short will let them become more susceptible to drought and weeds.  Set your mower blade so that the grass is cut to a height of 3+ inches for St. Augustine and 2.5+ inches for Centipede.  St. Augustine does very well at 4 inches.

This will help hold the moisture in the soil and will keep the weeds from growing. Centipede should be cut enough to keep it from going to seed.

Just keep in mind you should never cut or remove more than one third of the grass height in one mowing.

You can find some other useful lawn help at http://www.aces.edu/pubs/docs/A/ANR-0239/.  However, note that the information on that site is based on an average of the entire state.  Mobile has it own unique environment.
