Using the Yahoo Forum
Technical How To
Note that several terms are often used interchangeably to describe this
method of communication -- forum, group, e-group, interactive email list,
etc. These are
all the same thing. The terminology of "sending an email to the
group"
and "posting a message on the forum" indicate the same activity.
Do I need a Yahoo ID?
Posting a message to the
membership
Replying to an individual member
Accessing archived
emails and newsletters
Setting your preferred email
address for the forum
Changing email delivery
frequency
Viewing Yahoo Group shared
services
No. A Yahoo ID is not necessary to receive emails from and send emails
to the membership.
However, setting up a Yahoo ID will give you full
access to the Yahoo Group online features which allow you to:
-
View files stored in the Files section of
our forum, such as minutes of meetings you may have missed, archived newsletters,
association legal documents and more.
-
View archived
messages (emails posted before you joined the forum).
-
Read messages online
at the Yahoo website in classic discussion forum format, with threaded and
grouped discussion topics.
-
Participate in online
polls.
-
View the group's online
calendar.
-
and more
If the group moderator added you to the group manually, you will receive a
welcome email from Yahoo, suggesting that you "complete your Yahoo Groups
account." If you do not wish to use the Yahoo online features such as
those listed above, you need do nothing else.
But if you choose to set up a Yahoo ID to utilize online features, note that even after
doing so, you may still use any email address you wish
for delivery of group emails. Tips on changing your preferred email
address are further down this page.
Send an email to
jhaamobile@yahoogroups.com. This will send out an email to
everyone on the email list (everyone in the Yahoo group).
You will not be able to send a message to the membership until you have been
set up on the forum email list, which can be accomplished in one of two
ways:
-
ask a moderator to
add you manually so that you do not have to go through the Yahoo ID setup
process,
-
or click the "Join
This Group" button on the Yahoo site to set up a Yahoo ID (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jhaamobile),
and this will generate an email to the moderator to approve your request.
When group emails arrive from the Yahoo forum, the sender will appear as
something like this:
jhaamobile@yahoogroups.com on behalf of John Doe [john:doe@domain:name.com]
To
reply to John Doe directly rather than to the entire membership, create
a new email and then copy and paste -- or
manually type -- John's address
(john:doe@domain:name.com) into the
new email, instead of replying to the all-member email address.
Or you can simply click reply, but then
remove
jhaamobile@yahoogroups.com from the “to” line and
enter John Doe's personal email address instead.
To access emails and
newsletters which were posted before you joined the forum, you will need
a Yahoo ID. If you do not already have a Yahoo ID, set one up as
per the welcome email Yahoo sent you when you joined. Note that
you may still receive JHAA emails at any address you wish but to access
our online file storage, you need a Yahoo ID.
Email messages can be
accessed here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jhaamobile/messages
Newsletters, meeting
minutes and other files can be accessed here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jhaamobile/files/
If you set up a Yahoo ID when you joined the group,
this means that Yahoo also created an email account for you. If you
are receiving group emails at the Yahoo address but you would prefer them
delivered to a different email address, follow the steps indicated on the
Yahoo account pages below.
-
First, add an
alternate email for your Yahoo account. Go to this page:
http://groups.yahoo.com/member/preferences/email/view,
click the text "Add/Remove Email Address," then follow the prompts to enter
another email address. Yahoo will send a verification email to the
alternate email address. Once you verify, your alternate email address
will be added to your Yahoo account.
-
Next, set your
preferred email address for where you want emails from your Yahoo Group
delivered. Go to this page: http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups,
click "Edit My Groups" then select your preferred email address from the
drop-down menu in the "Email Address" column.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the number of group emails
arriving in your inbox each day, below are some options for you.
First of all, it is
recommended that you use a personal email address rather than a work email address
so that messages from our forum do not disturb you at work. Secondly,
you can change the frequency with which you receive emails.
To change email delivery
preferences yourself, you must set up (or already have) a Yahoo ID.
If you do not have a Yahoo ID and do not wish to set one up, contact one of the forum moderators and ask them to
change your email delivery settings for you.
Note that Options 1 and 2
below do not require a Yahoo ID (the moderator can change that setting for you).
Option 3 does require a Yahoo ID.
Option 1: Daily Digest
Change your email
delivery from "individual emails" to "daily digest" -- then you will get
delivery of group emails in one bulk download only once a day (instead of
one-at-a-time all day long).
Click here for the Yahoo Help page on
Message Delivery Options.
Option 2: Email Filters
Most email programs
allow you to set up filters so that emails from a source you specify can be
automatically routed to a subfolder. Microsoft Outlook has this feature, as
does Yahoo, Gmail, Comcast, Bellsouth and almost all other email services. Once you set up a filter for your
JHAA emails,
then all incoming JHAA emails are placed into the subfolder you specified,
keeping your primary email inbox
less crowded.
Tip: You might want to use the filter settings in addition to the Yahoo
"daily digest" option. Then your group emails will come in only once a day
and they will automatically be routed into the subfolder you specified
rather than your Inbox.
If you have a Yahoo email address, click the links below for the Yahoo Help pages on filters.
If you use another email service, these links may still give you some idea
of how to set up filters with your own email provider.

Option 3: Web-Only
Remove email delivery
all together. Then you can go online at your convenience and read
message posts on the Yahoo site. Where to read messages online:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jhaamobile/messages.
Suggestion:
If you remove email delivery all together, make a point of checking the
messages online at the Yahoo site at least every other day or so to stay
informed of neighborhood issues!
Tip: If you opt to read messages online, note that you can "group by topic"
to consolidate the display into specific discussion threads. Then you
don’t have to open up any topics which do not interest you. Click here
for the Yahoo Help page on how to
Group by Topic.
Important Note: For Option 3 (web-only, no direct email delivery), you
must have a Yahoo
ID. You will need to log in to the Yahoo forum website with your Yahoo
ID in order to read messages online.
You must have set up a
Yahoo ID to view these items.
Calendar
View the JHAA group
calendar: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jhaamobile/cal.
The calendar will display dates and times of JHAA meetings as well as
neighborhood events.
File Storage
View the JHAA files
section here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jhaamobile/files.
Archived newsletters and other documents are stored there.
