NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

Jackson Blvd Entry Markers Renovation

June-Aug 2009

What was done:

  • The brick was pressure-washed and then painted a soft gray.

  • The ironwork was repainted (gloss black).

  • New letters, designed in the classical Times Roman font and much larger than the old letters, were installed.

  • New lamps and new lightbulbs were installed.

  • Black urns with a traditional fluted shape were installed on the columns opposite the lamps.

  • Asparagus ferns were planted in the new urns.

  • Black flexible edging was installed to create a circular bed in front of the markers.

  • Landscape fabric was placed between the markers and the edging to prevent weed growth.

  • White marble chips were placed in the circular bed.  These will help reflect both sunlight and nighttime spotlights up on the letters.

  • Dark green mondo grass was planted around the outside of the circular bed.

  • Soft-touch holly bushes were planted next to the columns on each side.  These will be kept trimmed to neat, round balls no taller than about 2 feet.

  • Ground-level spotlights were installed.  One small spotlight per marker is positioned just outside the edging of the circular marble bed, and is centered to light up the letters at night.  They function the same as the lamps on the lampposts, using the dusk-to-dawn sensor.  They use a low wattage to softly light the letters but not disturb the residents nearby or appear too garish.
